NotebookLM alternative
A NotebookLM alternative that teaches you, not just your sources
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It is the same product, and it is very good at what it was built for: you give it documents and it answers questions about them, quoting the exact passage each answer came from. It also makes study guides, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes and those Audio Overviews that turn a folder of PDFs into two people discussing them.
It is a research assistant, and Google's own help centre says so plainly: if the answer is not in your sources, it will not respond. EduZen AI is the other thing. Name a subject and a date and it writes the syllabus, teaches the lessons, sets the questions, marks them for you and keeps a record of what you got wrong. You can bring material, but you do not have to have any.
The short answer
Pick NotebookLM if you have the material already and your problem is understanding it, especially if you want answers that never stray from the documents you provided.
Pick EduZen AI if you need to be taught a subject rather than answered about it, if you want a plan with a date on it, or if you are sitting IELTS.
What NotebookLM does well
Grounding is the whole point and it is done properly. Answers use only the sources in your notebook, citations are direct quotes rather than paraphrase, and clicking one jumps to where it came from in the document.
It refuses to guess. Google's help centre states that if the answer is not in your source material, it will not provide a response, which is exactly right for research.
To our ear, Audio Overviews are the best listening feature in this comparison. Deep dive, brief, critique and debate formats, each with two hosts except the single-speaker brief, plus Video Overviews if you would rather watch.
It reads almost anything: Docs, Slides, Sheets, PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, web pages, public YouTube videos with captions, images, audio it transcribes on import, and ebooks.
Flashcards and quizzes are built in, with easy, medium and hard difficulty, an Explain button on any card or answer, and it remembers your progress so you can drill only the cards you missed.
Over 80 languages, and apps on iOS and Android as well as the web.
Where EduZen AI is different
It answers about your sources. We teach the subject. That is not a criticism, it is the design. Gemini Notebook can now go and find its own sources from a topic you type, but it still answers only from the sources sitting in the notebook. EduZen AI will take a subject and a target date, write the syllabus for it, and teach the first lesson with nothing in front of it at all.
A whole paper, not a deck of cards. NotebookLM turns your sources into flashcards and quizzes and remembers which ones you missed. EduZen AI ships full IELTS Academic Reading and Listening papers, sat under a clock you cannot pause or reload away, marked at the end rather than as you go, with the band printed beside the raw score.
The record follows the student, not the notebook. NotebookLM remembers your progress through a set of cards. EduZen AI keeps one record per student across every subject, and what it stores is a sentence about the mistake, such as picking False when the passage is silent about something. The tutor reads that before it teaches you again.
A schedule with a date on it. EduZen AI asks when the exam is and which days you study, writes a plan of phases and sessions across them, and rebuilds it every time you open the page so a missed week moves rather than breaks.
EduZen AI vs NotebookLM, side by side
| EduZen AI | NotebookLM | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is built for | Teaching a subject step by step, and getting you to a target by a date you choose. | A research assistant grounded in sources you upload, for understanding and organising material you already have. |
| What you give it | A goal, or your own PDFs, slides, photos, YouTube links and typed notes. Material is optional. | Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, text and Markdown, web pages, public YouTube videos with captions, images, audio transcribed on import, and Play Books titles. Fifty sources per notebook on the free tier. |
| What comes back | A lesson taught in steps with one drawn thing per step, then graded practice, notes, flashcards and quizzes. | Chat answers with inline citations, study guides, briefing documents, FAQs, mind maps, infographics, slide decks, flashcards, quizzes, and Audio and Video Overviews. |
| Practice under exam conditions | Full IELTS Academic Reading and Listening papers under a clock you cannot pause or reload away, marked at the end and never during. | Flashcards and quizzes generated from the sources in your notebook, with easy, medium and hard difficulty and an Explain button on any card or answer. |
| What it remembers between sessions | Named gaps in plain words, such as picking False when the passage is silent. They decide what tomorrow's practice is about. | It remembers your flashcard progress and can re-run only the cards you missed. |
| A schedule with a date on it | A dated plan of phases and sessions, rebuilt around your study days every time you open it. | A notebook acts as a project space holding one set of sources together. |
| Where it runs | A web browser, on a phone or a laptop. There is no iOS or Android app yet. | Web, iOS and Android, plus Google Workspace, and Google Search AI Mode in English only. Over 80 languages. |

Which one should you pick?
Pick NotebookLM if…
- You are doing research and need answers that never leave the documents you supplied.
- You would rather listen than read. Their Audio Overviews are the best thing of their kind here.
- You want a phone app and more than 80 languages, both of which they have and we do not.
Pick EduZen AI if…
- You have a subject and a deadline, and you want a syllabus and a teacher rather than a set of documents to interrogate.
- You are sitting IELTS and want whole papers on a clock rather than cards made from your notes.
- You want the tutor to remember what you get wrong across everything you study, not just inside one notebook.
Questions people ask
Is EduZen AI a good alternative to NotebookLM?
Yes, if your problem is learning a subject rather than interrogating documents. NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, is built to answer from sources you upload and will stay silent if the answer is not in them. EduZen AI writes a syllabus from a goal, teaches the lessons in steps on a canvas, marks the questions for you and keeps a record of the mistakes you keep making. If you already have the material and need it explained and cited, NotebookLM is excellent at that.
Has NotebookLM been renamed?
Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026 and said it is the same standalone product. The old address redirects to the new one and the help centre moved with it. This page keeps the old name in the title because that is the name the product is still searched under.
Does NotebookLM have flashcards and quizzes?
Yes. Google's help centre documents flashcards and quizzes generated from your sources, with easy, medium and hard difficulty settings, an explain button that tells you why an answer was wrong, and remembered progress so you can practise only the cards you missed. Anyone telling you it cannot test you is working from an old page.
Does Google offer study plans and timed practice tests?
Yes, but in a different product. Study notebooks in the Gemini app run diagnostic quizzes, build personalised lessons and track progress, and Google's help pages describe practice tests there for SAT, JEE Main and NEET UG with a countdown timer. That is the Gemini app, not Gemini Notebook, and no Google page says those lessons appear inside Gemini Notebook itself. If a dated plan and a timed test are what you want from Google, that is where to look.
Can EduZen AI work without me uploading anything?
Yes. You can name a subject and a target date and EduZen AI will write the plan, teach the first lesson and set questions on it with no file involved. Uploading your own PDFs, slides, photos or YouTube links is supported and they sit in the same folder tree as your notes, but nothing waits on them.
